Exene and John married Easter Sunday in Tijuana, celebrated the release of “Los Angeles” from Slash Records at the Whisky, after being filmed live for “Decline” at Club 88. Exene’s younger sister Mary, aka Muriel, starred in a film directed by her husband Gordon Abrams about a young woman in the 1930’s who was celebrated for her stigmatas. They visited from NY to show the film and join the festivities.

However, on the way to a Whisky show, a hit and run driver caused Muriel’s death. I took the last photos of her the night before. For an unknown reason, I just couldn’t go to  the show -- I fell out of the mood. Claude Bessy came by to tell me the following morning. He, like everyone,  knew how much I loved X.

X played the Hollywood Palladium a few days after returning from the Florida funeral. I hated shooting there because it’s impossible to get good shots. Exene wore her sister’s Dodger jacket and I caught a glimpse of her grief. Listen to “Riding with Mary,” Exene’s poignant ode to those events. I never drive without a little statue of the Virgin Mary, “protection to pass.”
